My dad told me it was just puppy love. I was a first-semester college student, and my high school relationship of three years was over. And yet—I was just broken-hearted. All I can offer to the freshman on campus is: Welcome to college—where friendship, stress, hormones, partying and adulthood are taken to a different level. Why is it that, in college, we watch so many of our friends dump, get dumped, cheat and get cheated on? And why does it almost always happen our freshman year in college?
To find out why these types of breakup occur so often, I conducted a survey on campus during a week and a half in early December. Students completed a confidential questionnaire and were offered the chance to do a follow-up interview with their anonymity preserved. Students were asked on the form to indicate their gender, year in college, whether or not they began college dating their high school girlfriend or boyfriend and whether or not they were still dating.

Did you finish on an upward trajectory, with strong grades and impressive extracurricular involvement? Or did you limp out of high school as a mere survivor? An upward trajectory makes a compelling case to college admissions officers. This is especially true if you must offset lower grades from your freshman or sophomore years. A strong finish demonstrates that a student can work hard to overcome initial setbacks.
Some students who coast by on talent or aptitude hit a wall when they finally reach college. While high school yearbooks did not start covering proms and including prom pictures until the s and s, historians, including Meghan Bretz, believe proms may have existed at colleges as early as the late 19th century.
The journal of a male student at Amherst College in recounts an invitation and trip to an early prom at neighboring Smith College for women. The word prom at that time may just have been a fancy description for an ordinary junior or senior class dance, but prom soon took on larger-than-life meaning for high school students.
In the early 20th century, prom was a simple tea dance where high school seniors wore their Sunday best.
